Cosmetic Dentistry

Very often our patients indicate that they would like to improve the appearance of their smile. They may feel that their teeth are discoloured or stained, that their smile is too “gummy”, or they may even just wish they could start all over again with a great new smile.

Cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry can help with all of these problems. Sometimes patients only need a relatively simple and affordable treatment, at other times they may opt for a complete smile makeover, where we use a number of treatments together to provide them with the smile they have always wanted.

Our cosmetic and aesthetic treatments include:

  • White cosmetic fillings
  • Veneers
  • Bonding
  • Crowns
  • Bridges
  • Tooth whitening
  • Orthodontic treatment
  • Dental Implants
  • Dentures

White cosmetic fillings

White fillings can transform your teeth by getting rid of ugly black fillings and letting your natural tooth shine through. Traditionally, cavities in back teeth were repaired with silver fillings, and white fillings were only used on front teeth. This was because the white filling material in the past was not as strong as silver amalgam, and so could not withstand the heavier chewing forces generated by the molar teeth. In the past 5-10 years, there have been significant advances in dental materials, so that now white fillings are as good as silver amalgam fillings.

They offer several advantages:

  • Far superior cosmetics – they look and feel just like natural teeth.
    It is possible to bond white fillings to the tooth, so they require less of the healthy part of a tooth to be removed to hold the filling in place.
  • There is no mercury in white fillings, which means they are kinder to the environment.
  • They do not expand in the cavity and so place less internal stress in the tooth than silver amalgam

Dental Veneers

A veneer is a very thin porcelain facing bonded on to the front of your teeth (usually your top teeth). If your front teeth are stained, chipped, or malaligned, then porcelain veneers can give you a good life-like appearance with minimum tooth adjustment.
Veneers are made out of porcelain and are used mainly for aesthetic reasons.
Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy, and because they are very thin and are held in place by a special strong bond, very little enamel removal is needed.

Dental Bonding

Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-coloured resin material (a durable plastic material) is applied to a natural tooth and hardened with a special light which ultimately “bonds” (sticks) the material to the tooth to restore or improve a person’s smile.

When should Dental Bonding be considered?

  • To repair and restore the appearance and shape of decayed teeth (composite resins are used to fill cavities);
  • To repair chipped or cracked teeth;
  • To improve the appearance of discoloured teeth;
  • To close spaces between teeth;
  • To make teeth look longer;
  • To change the shape of teeth;
  • As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings;
  • To protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed when gums recede.

Crown

A crown is used to cover and protect a weakened tooth. A tooth can be weakened due to several reasons: tooth fracture, dental decay, a large filling that is starting to break down or if the tooth has been root canal treated (see below). Crowns can be made from porcelain, metal or a combination of the two. The added advantage of a crown is that it can improve the appearance of a tooth.

Bridge

A bridge is a fixed replacement for a missing tooth or teeth. It’s made by taking an impression of the surrounding teeth, which will eventually support the bridge. A bridge is usually created from precious metal and porcelain and will be fixed in your mouth (unlike dentures, which can be removed).

Dentures

More commonly known as false teeth, dentures are fitted in place of natural teeth. A dental denture is an appliance which is worn to replace lost or missing teeth to enable you to enjoy a healthy diet and smile with confidence.
A complete or full denture is one that replaces all of the natural teeth in either the upper or lower jaws and provides support for cheeks and lips. Without this support, sagging facial muscles can make a person appear older and reduce their ability to eat and speak.
A partial denture fills in the spaces created by lost or missing teeth and is attached to your natural teeth with metal clasps or devices called precision attachments.
The base of a denture is called a plate and can be made of either acrylic (plastic) or metal. The teeth are normally made of acrylic and can be made to match your natural teeth. This is especially important in the case of partial dentures.
